the reservoir engineer is in charge to increase the productivity from under-producing wells, to develop new areas, and to manage the whole reservoir in a cost effective manner.

I am working for Sonatrach Group, Algerian oil and gas company, as reservoir engineer. Now, I am within a multi-disciplinary team called POT, production optimization team, with the cooperation of Halliburton. I benefit from Five (05) years experience with the large and the complicated Hassi Messaoud oil field.
Our main mission is to manage some regions in this very big field. This is done using first the reservoir surveillance procedures so that under producing wells are selected and under/over injection wells are identified. Once a well is identified to be under-producing, the entire sector including offset wells will be considered in the study. Generally, the study covers many sections, like production and well interventions history, geological and petrophysic description (together with the geologist and log-analyst), injection and pressure maintenance evaluation, breakthrough analysis, drive mechanisms appreciation, reserves estimation and future well performance forecasting. During the analysis one may use several reservoir engineering tools like material balance, transient well testing, decline curve analysis, nodal analysis, PVT and SCAL analysis...etc
Sometimes, special data and tests are not available so we request to run some extra tests (if any) to help in better reservoir description and understanding.
At the end of the study, conclusions and recommendations are drawn for the subject well and its entire region. According to the specifications of each case, the optimum recommendations may vary from a simple intervention to heavy and expensive one as hydraulic fracturing or re-entry project. About the zone location, good understanding of the hydraulic connection is generally achieved along with recognizing of permeability barriers and/or high streak permeability zones. In addition, the injection and the sweep efficiency are evaluated; the un-swept zones are localized, and all this will be considered in future plan of voidage, drilling, and workover.
As mentioned above, I am also exposed to many other petroleum activities including hydraulic fracturing, acidizing, re-entry and conversion wells to short radius, shut-off and conformance, well test design and interpretation, formation damage analysis, gas-lift, perforating, PLT/MDT interpretation, horizontal wells performance.
