International Cooperation Minister Sahar Nasr held talks with representatives of a number of international financing institutions, including the World Bank, the USAID and JICA, over the projects they are financing in Egypt or about to be financed.
Talks with the USAID officials tackled the sectors the Egyptian government wants them to contribute to, Nasr told MENA. She also expressed government's keenness that the US agency would continue funding drainage projects as well as small and medium-sized projects that provide jobs to young people and women. With the WB officials, Nasr talked about the eight-billion-dollar portfolio the bank pledged to last year that will be dedicated to social solidarity and social housing projects as well as to small and medium-sized projects. She stressed that there is no delay in offering the WB loan to Egypt and there are no preconditions for getting that loan. She made clear that the government has presented the economic program to the parliament and it is waiting for its decision. The WB has previously said that disbursement of the first tranche of its financial support is conditional on the acceptance of cabinet’s economic program. Nasr is in Washington to take part in the World Bank and International Monetary Fund’s spring meetings that start April 15. She will be joined with Central Bank of Egypt President Tarek Amer and Finance Minister Amr el Garhy. |
