Kuwait has recently donated USD eight million to support humanitarian efforts for around 10,000 internally displaced persons in Mosul, Iraq, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced.
The Kuwaiti donation will enable UNHCR to provide further aid and protection to the displaced families that recently fled their homes, and also contribute in keeping up the flow of humanitarian aid to these families, UNHCR office in Kuwait said in a statement. This generous donation by Kuwait would also assists in the continuation of field response and prevention of major humanitarian crisis in Mosul, especially with the ongoing violence, Amin Awad, UNHCR's Director for Middle East and North Africa Operations, said in the statement. It also came in a perfect time, particularly since the winter season is currently nearing, Awad noted, commending Kuwait's wise leadership under His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, and the Kuwaiti people's absolute solidarity with the humanitarian issues which keeps on winning the world's admiration and respect. In the past four years, Kuwait has donated about USD 360 million to support the commissioner's humanitarian activities in the region, maintaining its rank as UNHCR's largest donner in the Middle East and North Africa, he mentioned. |
