Minister of Transport Hisham Arafat promised that citizens will witness a significant improvement in railway services before the end of 2019.
This came during a surprise inspection tour by the minister to Ramses railway station to check on the regularity of operating schedules and services provided to passengers. Chatting with some passengers during his tour, Arafat said that Egypt will obtain 100 modern locomotives at a cost of EGP 11.5 billion, while 81 old ones will undergo maintenance and spare parts will arrive for another 181. He noted that Egypt will also receive another 100 locomotives that it has purchased with the support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) at a cost of EGP 5.8 billion. In addition to this, he added, Egypt will be getting 1,300 new passenger carriages at an estimated cost of about EGP 20 billion in a deal that has been described as the largest in the history of the Egyptian National Railways. |
