Minister of International Cooperation and Egypt’s Governor at the World Bank Group Rania el Mashat has underscored the important role of structural reforms in achieving a flexible and sustainable economic recovery that is able to withstand future shocks.
The Egyptian government’s success in implementing an ambitious economic reform program from 2016 to 2018 has enabled it to absorb the shock of coronavirus, and enhance the effectiveness of its development plans, Mashat told a World Bank virtual session on the importance of data transparency in the Middle East and North Africa region, and the coronavirus response. Mashat said the Egyptian government has succeeded in using data during the time of the coronavirus pandemic; with the aim of confronting it and trying to overcome its direct repercussions. The global pandemic proved the importance of maintaining multilateral cooperation at the level of exchanging expertise as regards the detection of coronavirus cases and keeping up with international efforts against the pandemic, she added. Transparency and teamwork have been features of the Egyptian government’s policy to confront the coronavirus pandemic, the minister said, noting that the State has used databases to reach more than 1.5 million casual workers who have been affected by the crisis. The session was attended by Vice President and Chief Economist of the World Bank Group Carmen Reinhart, World Bank’s Vice President for Middle East and North Africa Ferid Belhaj and speakers from Johns Hopkins University and the International Association for Official Statistics, among others. The session was held ahead of the bank’s annual meetings that are set to be held on October 8-15. |
