The Ministry of Transport has invited private companies to invest in river transport projects, making use of a comprehensive plan developed by the ministry to adopt a set of measures and mechanisms that help bring about a significant breakthrough in this sector.
The plan involves increasing the number of river transport passengers as well as the volume of freight carried via the Nile River, the ministry noted in a statement, outlining potential areas of involvement for the private sector, such as creating specialized river transport units to improve river transport patterns and capacities. Investment opportunities also include building advanced river transport units to carry petroleum products in conformity with globally recognized standards for environment, health, and safety, in coordination with the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, while adopting all the measures and restrictions needed to prevent river pollution, the ministry said. Opportunities also include creating modern transport units that contribute to the transport vehicles and containers, the ministry added. President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has signed Law No. 167/2022 reconstituting the General Authority for River Transport (GART) to make GART the main regulator of river transport operations in Egypt, and stimulate private investments in this sector. |
