The International Conference "East and West, Dialogues of Civilisations", organised by Sant'Egidio in cooperation with the Muslim Council of Elders, has concluded in Florence, Italy, with calls for boosting religious, co-existence and cultural dialogues among different cultures.
Dario Nardella, mayor of Florence and Cardinal Giuseppe spoke in the inaugural session, emphasising the themes of religious and cultural dialogue. They were followed by Grand Imam Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, Romano Prodi, former Italian Prime Minister and Dr. Mahmoud Hamdi Zaqzouq, Board member of Muslim Council of Elders and other dignitaries. Imam of Al-Azhar refuted the definition of West in line with certain religious and ethnic characteristics, noting that this definition falters when taking into account millions of migrant Muslims who settled in Europe and US, where they become noticeable in the social fabric of West "The cooperation and exchange of scientific, cultural and artistic elements between the two civilisations may constitute a common ground for building a cultural affinity based on integration and sharing of benefits, consolidation of principles of democracy, freedom and the rights of Eastern peoples on equal footing with Westerners to enjoy a safe and dignified life," he added. Grand Imam of Al Azhar called on the Eastern Christians and Muslims to amend their view on Westerners, adding that the Easterners should cease deeming all Western civilisation evil. "Western civilisation cherishes humanity values with some flaws and shortcomings though. No doubt it has saved humanity and shifted it to the scientific and technical prospects," he added, noting that the East has what it takes to fill West's spiritual and religious gaps. "Solidarity between the elders of West and East is inevitable to stop the terrorism that stems from false reading of the holy books and blindly supported by global policies and huge sums of money, of which tenth of those amounts are not spent to fight poverty, ignorance, disease and underdevelopment in the third world countries," the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar lamented. |
